Shoreline Protection Colouring Contest

Hey Kids,

Preserving our shorelines in their natural state is important for a number of reasons:

  1. A natural shoreline helps to protect the water quality for us so that we can swim in it and drink it. That also goes for the creatures that live in or by the lake like fish, frogs, turtles, salamanders, crayfish, deer and even our dogs who like to swim in it and drink it too!

  2. A natural shoreline protects the lake from all the yucky stuff in the septic system which leaches phosphorus through the ground to the lake. The trees and shrubs like phosphorus so they help to keep it out of the lake. That protects the water for us, our pets and all the other creatures which depend on clean water.

  3. A natural shoreline is NOT a lawn down to the lake. A lawn is called a monoculture and the fertilizer that some people put on lawns even makes the phosphorus levels worse. Lawns also attract geese who like to eat the grass and you know what else geese do? That’s right, they make a poopy mess and who wants to walk in that or even worse swim in it! Lawns do not protect our lakes.

The Wilberforce Fair has a colouring contest on until August 1st, 2021. Kids colour in the “before and after” picture of a shoreline and earn a chance to win one of four $25 cash prizes. There are a total of four $25 prizes one for each age category (4-5 yrs, 6-7 yrs, 8-9 yrs, 10-12 yrs).
